FRAMING ISSUES IN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE: FROM THE USE OF CHILDREN’S LITERATURE AS PROPAGANDA TO ITS NARRATIVE TECHNIQUE

In the article, Children’s Literature as Propaganda in Constructing Women as Domestic Sphere Attendant and Masculine Dominated in Little Women for Children by Louisa May Alcott, Alisya Rusdianti, Rizka Fatihah and Dini Puji Agustini presents their critical reading of Little Women, a novel by Louisa May Alcott, with the specific interest in the portrayal of women’s social roles in its story.

Their focus on the female characters in the novel is underpinned by an assumption that Little Women for children contributes to the propaganda that supports women’s domesticity and male domination. This notion, which they refer to as the basic assumption for their interpretation of the work, appear to also serve as the hypothesis that they clearly intend to substantiate in their article. Preceding the discussion section, they highlight that “Little Women for children shows the women characters with strong characterization and have been freed from masculine domination, but in case it is the manipulative point. Because basically women are still in the domestic sphere and have not been able to enter the public sphere.”
